The Manu Wildlife Tour - Extreme Wildlife

This trip is designed for those who do not have enough time, but want to visit the Reserved Zone of Manu, that offers by far the greatest quantity and diversity of animals and plants in the world, and boasts the highest bird, mammal, and plant diversity of any park on Earth, including 1,000 of the world's 9,700 bird species, 200 species of mammals, and 15,000 species of flowering plants. The most photogenic spectacles are Giant Otters, Jaguars, Black Caiman and Tapirs.

ITINERARY DESCRIPTION

Day 1: Cusco – Amazon Pona Lodge
On the first day of our adventure into the Jungle of Manu, we will pick you up around 5:00 AM from your Hotels in Cusco, using Amazon Tours Peru private transport, our first stopping to visit the pre Inca burial towers of Ninamarca. We then drive through the mountains to get to Tres Cruces, the highest point and entrance to Manu National Park to one of the most protected natural areas in South America. From here we will continue into the Cloud Forest and at Fog forest we will explore for around 4 hours to observe the National bird of Perú, (the cock of the rock), the biggest monkey in Peru (woolly monkeys) and to observe different types of bromeliads and beautiful orchids. Then we arrive to our Amazon Pona Lodge where we will sleep in a beautiful and rustic lodge, this night before dinner we do short night walking using our rubber boots (night walk optional).

DAY 2: Amazon Pona Lodge – Manu river - Casa Matsiguenka Lodge
Very early at 05:00 a.m., we will leave in the direction to the Port of Atalaya, Arriving at the small village of Atalaya we change into a motorized canoe to navigate down the fast of Alto Madre de Dios River, with all our equipments (life jackets) then we enter the clay laden waters of the Manu River. With a brief stop at the park ranger station of Limonal to present our permits,
along the boat trip especially on the beaches in the dry season we will see some sunning White Caimans and Black Caimans and Turtles, there is a chance of encountering a sunning Jaguar (the world's third largest cat) or tapir crossing the river (the biggest mammal in the amazon)
We will also see some species of primates on this river trip, possibly spider Monkeys, Red Howler Monkeys or the smaller Squirrel Monkeys. After having lunched by the river we arrive at Casa Matsiguenka. We'll have the afternoon to explore some of the trails through the pristine rainforest of this area.
Before or after dinner, an optional excursion into the forest at night is available with your guide in search of nocturnal creatures. We spend the night at the Casa Matsiguenka; a rustic native owned lodge run by the Matsiguenka's themselves, with its own exclusive trail system. There are flush toilet and shower facilities and screened twin rooms, with comfortable beds and mosquito nets.

DAY 3: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Macaws Clay Lick - Salvador Lake.
We will begin with an early morning visiting to the Macaw Clay Lick, a special place where flocks of Parakeets, Parrots and Macaws come every day to eat the nutritious lick located at the wall of a small river. We will stay here at a Camouflaged shelter, however this activity is very much weather dependent. After a good breakfast We will visit to one of the biggest lake in the Manu National Park the stunning Salvador Lake, which is the natural habitat for any countless number of species as the Black Cayman and the Giant River Otters (the world's largest freshwater carnivores), both of which are endangered. This is one of the only areas in the entire world where we may see one, not in captivity, but instead in its natural environment.
After lunch we start our excursion thought the virgin jungle to Cocha Otorongo Lake, where there is a 20m high observation tower. From this tower we will have another chance to see giant otters and caimans, your guide will offer you a full interpretation of the fauna and flora, the ecosystem, interaction and symbiosis in this fragile ecosystem of this complicated Tropical Amazonian forest.
We might also find a group of peccaries. In the evening we can enjoy the beautiful sunset and return to Casa Matchiguenka Lodge, where we spend the night.

DAY 4: Casa Matsiguenka Lodge – Shipetiari Ecological Reserve.
We leave the Casa Matchiguenka Lodge very early to have another opportunity to see jaguar on our way out of the Reserve Zone of the Park. We might also see tapirs, turtles and caimans. After a short stop in Boca Manu a visit to the native community of Diamante is optional. We continue upriver (Alto Madre de Dios River) to Reserve Ecological Shipetiari, where we spend the night. In the evening we will build a fire, relax and have some drinks.

DAY 5: Shipetiari Ecological Reserve - Cusco.
We get up early to keep exploring the forest and after breakfast we return to Atalaya by boat. Our private van will be waiting for us to take us back to Cusco via the cloud forest and Paucartambo. We will arrive in Cusco in the late afternoon.
